Course design

Why workplace learning can be so hard (and SO rewarding) to design and deliver.

A large part of designing and delivering learning experiences is finding ways to make Boring/Complex/Irrelevant topics Intriguing/Concise/Relevant. When given convoluted regulatory requirements to create course material from, I usually don't understand them. Here are some of the things I'll do with a bulky regulatory requirement:

  • Read it numerous times.
  • Rip it apart.
  • Draw it out.
  • Make flowcharts.
  • Draw graphs.
  • Rewrite into simple terms.
  • Apply it to real work scenarios.

Then... I'll throw all that out and build an activity that gets to the heart of the issue. I use my lack of smart's as a superpower that fuels my inquisitive nature. My work ethic pulls me through... And finally. Hopefully... we have a learning opportunity where people get value for their time vs. just sitting in a seat.
