Overview
Aerial Boom Lift is a 1-day course for operators of aerial boom lifts. You learn the standards and OHS requirements that apply, the terrain types, the parts of the machine, and what the operator’s manual, data plate and decals tell you. You learn what affects stability and how to operate safely, including fall protection, controls, emergency planning and troubleshooting. You inspect the work area and the machine, check its functions, and complete a practical evaluation. Certification takes a theory test and a practical.
Standards
What's covered
Hands-on
Inspect the work area for drop-offs, debris, slopes, slippery surfaces, overhead obstructions and power lines, hazardous locations, surface support, wind and weather, unauthorized personnel and vehicle traffic.
Inspect the machine before use: manual, decals, wiring, leaks, fluid levels, tires, battery and guardrails, and the Annual Engineer Certification decal.
Test the ground controls (boom raise and lower, upper boom, extend and retract, jib, platform rotate, turret rotate) and then the platform controls.
A practical evaluation of the skills of operating the machine. Certification requires passing the theory test and the practical.
Certification
The 3-year expiry is not a regulatory requirement (no matter what anyone else tells you). This is an industry best practice.
