About

Who we are

Safety training that
doesn't suck.

Founded
2019
Based
Langley, BC

We design our training in-house and deliver our courses to end-users all the time. Our materials are revised so the courses stay current.

Our dedication to instructional excellence is passed on through our instructor training services. Most of our end-user programs are available for instructor candidates to teach inhouse for their employer, or as part of their own business offering training to clients.

Instructor programs

How instructors are trained.

You earn the first certificate before the second.

An instructor program starts with you as a student. You certify as an operator first, and if you can't demonstrate the competence yourself, the program stops there. At the end you certify as an instructor, if you pass. Some candidates haven't passed. We would rather lose the fee than put someone in front of a crew who isn't ready.

We teach instruction, not presentation.

Delivering safety training well is a different skill from knowing the subject. Instructors learn lesson structure, how to run a practical, how to check for understanding instead of asking "any questions?", and how to manage a room where people are tired, skeptical, or worried about looking foolish in front of their coworkers.

You get the system, not a slide deck.

Certified instructors deliver our courses with our materials, our lesson plans and our certificate management platform behind them, so the records and verification hold up when someone asks for proof years later.

The Team

Nicola Van der Laars

Partner / Instructor

Nicola Van der Laars

Nicola teaches every course and instructor program Haland offers. She has been an adult instructor since 2019 and runs seminars on inspecting fall protection equipment. She has shown an aptitude for facilitating live online learning courses.

Students describe her as patient, enthusiastic and clear, including students who arrived knowing nothing about the topic. An employer who sent staff to her seminar on inspecting fall protection equipment put what they learned to use right away.

“Nicola was excellent, I want to highlight her enthusiasm and energetic personality that engaged us with her instructions the whole training session. Even though some of us weren't familiar with the topic, she was patient and provided clear instructions, making our learning process so much easier.”

Behind the name

What's with the name
“Haland Learning”?

Cam, the founder of Haland has started numerous companies, and when founding Haland in 2019 wanted this one to be different.

He wanted this company to be based on love, authenticity and a dedication to excellence. Cameron has 3 children whose names are Hazel, Roland and Desmond. The name HALAND is a creation of two letters from each child's name.

  • 01 · Hazel
  • 02 · Roland
  • 03 · Desmond

Last letters

The closing letters. ND, the resolution. Six letters total, three kids.

Learning

Why the “learning”

Putting "Learning" in the name was deliberate. It's a reminder that we don't just deliver courses, we have to keep learning ourselves, about how adults learn, what's changed on jobsites, where last year's curriculum is now wrong. The word makes the obligation public.

Why the circle

The arrows in our mark point the same way on purpose. Training can't be pushed at students; it has to be reciprocal. Instructors learn from the room as much as the room learns from them. That's how the curriculum stays sharp and the outcomes stay real.
