Why training sucks: alignment and the learner's why

Course design

Have you ever taken a training class and had a hard time staying awake? Have you ever taught a training session and noticed people not paying attention? In todays world, a lot of the training is switching to an online delivery format. Now there's concern that workers taking this training are not paying attention 100% of the time.

An aligned training session will have these three components:

  • Objectives
  • Content and relevant Activities
  • Assessment of, and for Learning

Objectives must be connected to Content / Activities, and Content / Activities must be connected to the Assessment. In terms of whether people are paying attention, that is directly connected to WHY. WHY should they be paying attention?

In much of today's adult learning environment, people are attending sessions at the behest of their employer. It's thought that a person is motivated to keep their job, hence they WILL pay attention during class. Anyone that's taught adult instruction knows this is 100% false.

The design and delivery of any instruction must begin AND end with the learner in mind.

The content and activities must be relevant to skills / knowledge that should be transferred during the training session, the participants should know WHY they're relevant, have an emotional driver to be involved and then be provided with the means to DO something with this information.
