Instructional design and delivery 101, built live for one candidate

Instructor development

We were teaching an instructor program to a single instructor candidate from Mon-Wed this week. Typically instructors are getting geared up to teach our Haland Learning training program(s). Preparing instructors to teach our material is easy, because our material is designed with the learner in mind.

In this case, the instructor candidate would be going on to teach their employers content. This is where things got fun (for me). We modified our approach for this week. Instead of teaching how to teach our material, we got into Instructional Design and Delivery 101.

I built his fully customized instructor course for him, live, while he was taking it. We got into assumptions of adults learners, principles of adult instruction, course goal statements, objectives, activities/content, assessments, alignment, classroom management, time management, the art of asking good questions, engagement techniques and more.

One of the things he said really stuck with me "This is exactly the type of training I knew I needed, and never thought I was going to get." And, now we have a barebones course for something I've dreamed of offering for a few years now. Win-Win!
