A tool that measures the wrong things: my silent lesson experiment

Instructor development

I was enrolled in an instructor training program some time ago. As part of this program, I was required to deliver a lesson. Fair enough. During these programs, I will try to push the envelope and do something I've never done before. It's a great way to fail in a safe environment, and discover innovation.

In this case, the lesson delivery experiment had me deliver the entire lesson without speaking a SINGLE word. The lesson relied on students paying close attention to facial expression, sounds and gestures. The students engagement was THROUGH the roof. The lesson objectives were met. The lesson was delivered within time parameters. I got a LOW score.

Why? Because I didn't talk. LMAO! This is a great example of a tool that measures the wrong things.
